Fantastic turnout for Open Day! - May 2011 Print E-mail

St John Ambulance member demonstrating skillsSt. John Ambulance Cork, held an Open Day in Glanmire Community School, on Sunday May 15th last. The purpose of this was to showcase the work that the Brigade does in Cork, and elsewhere. It was decided to be held, with a view to running a first aid course, and then recruiting members of the public to form a new unit of St. John Ambulance, in Glanmire, Co. Cork

The day was very successful, with just over three hundred people making the trip to Glanmire Community School, to learn more about the Brigade. There was massive interest from both young people and adults alike, in taking the first aid course, and hopefully joining up to the Brigade, and forming the new First Aid unit.

Members from Cork City Division were on hand from early in the morning, to set up the hall in the school for the Open Day. Several stands were set up, with demonstrations at each stand. Each demonstration was designed so that all visitors went home with a valuable skill, which could be used in a sick or injured person’s time of need.  The public found our Citizen CPR demonstrations quite useful, and were most interested in what happens when more advanced help arrives for the patient. Our Emergency Medical Technicians were on hand to demonstrate the more advanced monitoring equipment that their skills allow them to use.St John Ambulance member demonstrating skills

We would like to extend our thanks to Glanmire Community School for the kind use of their premises, to facilitate the Open Day. The members of staff were unwavering in their support for us, and we anticipate a fantastic working relationship with the school, and the people in the Glanmire area.

A first aid course will take place next Sunday, May 22nd between 09:00 and 17:00 in the Glanmire Community School. People aged 11 and over are invited to attend. Two classes will be held; one for people aged 11-16 years of age, and another class for those aged 17 and over. The first meeting will take place in the school on Wednesday, June 1st 2011. Those aged between 11 and 16 will meet between 18:30 – 19:30 and those aged 17 and over will meet between 19:30-21:00.
